Disclaimer

I hate talking about business and money in this situation, but a lot of people's incomes are affected. Whether you are a business or a freelancer, it is good to be informed to deal with any kind of crisis.

The reason for this guide is that while we were working on renovating a landing page and booking flow for one of our clients, their physical inbound clients dropped to zero. They are most probably not the only ones in that situation. While it's only temporary, lots of businesses are paycheck to paycheck and can't take any hits to their revenue.

This post/guide is also available on Reddit's r/smallbusinessuae.

1. Service Based Businesses

Marketers, IT, Coaches, and similar

Arguably the easiest field to adapt in, but also one of the most affected. We have noticed a steep decline in inbound leads in the past few days, as a service business ourselves.

In this temporary situation, the general B2C market will prioritize essentials over services. The market has pivoted towards essential spending: food, flights, rentals, and savings. For B2B, many businesses are also fighting an uphill battle of maintaining consistent revenue. The market is under a temporary shock.

Here is what you can do:

  • Shift focus to retention over acquisition Not to say you should completely stop outbound or inbound strategies - but it is much easier to retain current clients right now. If it makes sense, consider offering more flexible payment terms.
  • Make your offer more essential If you are an IT company doing system rebuilds, it will be harder to sell right now. Try to position your offer around revenue systems, money-saving solutions, or simpler things like helping businesses with systems or websites affected by outages. For B2C service providers like coaches and trainers - consider mental health or wellness offerings if you are qualified.
  • Create a lower barrier of entry package When feelings of risk and fear are high, people are less willing to commit to large investments. People are asking themselves questions like "Would marketing make sense for my company right now?" The perceived risk is much higher, even if the objective reality is different. A lower-risk entry package minimizes friction - for a marketing company this could be affordable long-term SEO, or a small chatbot implementation.
  • Explore parallel markets This is especially valuable if your business can work across different languages. Spanish speakers can target Spain and the US, Arabic speakers can target KSA, Russian speakers can target Russia and the CIS. Even primarily English-based service businesses in IT, software, and marketing can potentially be sold to the UK, US, Australia, and Ireland. There will be some friction due to cultural differences, but it is entirely possible and would be a net benefit long-term.

2. Product Based Businesses

Restaurants, E-commerce, Perfumes, Real Estate, and similar

Beyond monetary capital, your business also has what I would call social capital — how you interact with your customers and how they perceive you. This is especially important if you are primarily selling within the UAE, as this is a fantastic time to build it.

  • Give back to the community if you can Depending on your financial situation and overall capital, look at whether you can give something back. A carwash business could offer a limited number of free washes to people affected. A restaurant can offer meals. A real estate agent can offer free relocation consultations. This is similar to what Danube has done — people will remember it for a very long time, and the loyalty built is unforgettable. The marketing benefit is a side effect of doing the right thing.
  • Reduce overall expenses A slow period is a great time to look at where your revenue is leaking. Review your expenses, look for processes that can be automated, find suppliers with better pricing, and identify where team performance can be improved.
  • Bundle slow-moving products with fast-moving ones If you run an e-commerce store and one product flies off the shelf while another barely moves — consider packaging them together. Support it with content like recipes, videos, or blogs that show why the two complement each other.
  • Improve your product photography and descriptions Some local e-commerce stores are still using AI-generated images or low quality photos. If that's you and you have the time — now is the moment to fix it. It may not impact sales immediately, but it will when things recover.
  • Reduce your booking flow Simplify the steps between a customer's intent and their completed booking:

I.e: Instead of: Website → App → Register → Choose Service → Choose Location → Book (6 steps) || Try: Website → WhatsApp → Book (3 steps)

Not only does this make it easier for your clients — it makes it easier for your team too.

Final Thoughts

Some of these may not apply to your specific situation (and that is completely fine). Take what is useful, leave what is not.

What works for one business may not work for another. There are also strategies not covered here that may be more relevant to your industry. If you have something that is working for you right now, share it (either with us, or on r/smallbusinessuae) the community benefits from every perspective.

To every business owner, freelancer, and individual navigating this: you have built something through harder times than most people realize. This is temporary.

I wish everyone safety, stability, and that this situation passes without harm to anyone.

InshaAllah this will be behind us soon.
